WinOptimizer Platinum Suite 3 Review

One of my all-time favorite multi-purpose optimization utility programs just got a major update. Of course, I'm talking about the release of WinOptimizer Platinum version 3: and there's plenty to talk about. To recap: What is WinOptimizer Platinum? ... For years, millions of users have depended on Ashampoo's award-winning WinOptimizer series to keep their PCs clean and running smoothly and efficiently. As one user put it, "[WinOptimizer Platinum 3] gives you all the maintenance tools that should have been included with Windows in the first place. And it's all so easy to use, you don't need a ... (view more)

Norton CleanSweep Replacement?

Infopackets Reader 'Francoise' writes: " Dear Dennis, Thanks for a great web site. I've learned a lot reading your articles. Question: I just bought a new computer and miss the CleanSweep from Norton System Works 2002 that I have on my old machine. ... I have been looking around for a utility that removes most URL's from the Internet Explorer address toolbar but keeps those that I use often. CleanSweep had a way of leaving those that I use regularly and delete the others. I tried a few apps that clear IE History but those pesky URLs are still there. Do you know of any utility (part of a bundle is ... (view more)

Top 10 Must-Have PC Maintenance Utilities

Die-hard Infopackets Reader Paul B. writes: " Dear Dennis, I have been a faithful subscriber to your newsletter for a few years now. While I immensely enjoy reading your articles (especially the software reviews), I am constantly second-guessing ... myself as to which utilities *I* need to keep my system running smoothly. As a newbie, I would like to know how many of these 'fix all programs' are really necessary? For example, which utilities do I need for: speeding up, uninstalling, defragging, anti-Spyware, anti-spam, firewall, anti-virus, registry cleaning / fixing... etc. I mostly use my ... (view more)

Registry Mechanic vs. WinOptimizer Platinum: which is better?

Infopackets Reader B.R. Hudgens writes: " Dear Dennis, I just read your article regarding the Registry Mechanic v4 release, as well as the article on WinOptimizer Platinum Suite . I have not yet tried either of these utilities on my system, but plan ... to do so very shortly because my PC has become very sluggish. I was wondering if you would give your opinion on the comparison of Registry Mechanic to WinOptimizer Platinum? I'm a bit confused because your article on WinOptimizer states that it cleans the System Registry (as does Registry Mechanic). And, both programs, as far as I understand ... (view more)

Is it safe to Remove Files in the Windows Temp folder?

Infopackets Reader 'P.S. Liew' writes: " Dear Dennis, Over the years, my 'temp' folder in Windows [located at c:\windows\temp] has gathered quite a substantial amount of temporary, space-eating files as well as Internet browser history items such as ... cookies, cache and the like. I am contemplating whether or not I should delete these files in order to reclaim hard disk space, but prior to doing so, I would like to get some pointers from you as to which selection of files in this folder is safe to delete. Am I wrong to assume that it is safe to completely delete all files in c:\windows\ ... (view more)

Remove recently visited web addresses and other info stored in Windows?

Infopackets Reader 'Woodstock216' writes: " Dear Dennis, Can you please tell me how to erase all the info that Windows stores automatically? Example: when I visit a web page, sometimes Windows will store the web site address so that I do not have to ... retype it all the time ... or when I fill in my email address, name, phone, etc on a web site? I have no clue where to even look to try to find this. Help! " My response: This is a frequently asked question. What you are referring to is called MRU history, which also refers to "Most Recently Used" information. Two of my all- ... (view more)
