Tidy Start Menu Review

Gerald from South Africa writes: " Dear Clif, I look forward to your weekly letters with great anticipation for I am always finding useful programs to experiment with and some to retain. I now have so many programs in my Start -> Programs Folder ... that there are now 3 full columns. How do I alter the columns into one long column? Also when I right click on the programs in the list I no longer get any response from the right click button so I am unable to remove those shortcuts that I no longer wish to retain. Clif's response: A freeware version of Tidy Menu comes to mind. From the web ... (view more)

Start Menu Goodies: Windows XP

When you click your Start button, Windows XP by default, displays two columns. On the left, you see programs, etc. Then you see a faint horizontal bar, followed by a list of recently used programs. On the right, you see locations – Microsoft Office, M ...y Documents and lots of other “stuff.” Now if you’re an advanced Windows user, you might know that you can put any program you want at the top of the left side of the Start menu by navigating to the program, right-clicking on it and choosing Pin to Start Menu. This works no matter how you get to the program. Any way that ..."/news/1134/start-menu-goodies-windows-xp" class="more-link">view more)

'Vista Start Menu', and 'Net Manager'

Vista Start Menu Each time you start programs from the Start menu, you use the interface that has not changed for 10 years. No wonder that it becomes more and more difficult to use it due to the increase in the number of programs! Vista Start Menu ... is a completely another approach to the interface. It is much easier to find and run the program you need. Everything is visual and extremely easy to use. Your applications are arranged in a table with icons divided into groups, which makes it easier to work with a lot of programs. And one more really important nuance: when you remove programs or ... (view more)

CLCL: a Powerful Clipboard Manager

Working at a computer can be very distracting. I've read that most people only stay focused on a task for an average of six minutes while using a PC. Personally, I get distracted even more than that! And this is especially true whenever I'm cutting ... and pasting things from the web. Often times I copy a graphic into the clipboard, get distracted for awhile, and then overwrite the clipboard with something else. Fortunately, I've managed to find a solution to this dilemma. CLCL is a clipboard manager , or more aptly put: a clipboard extender. It keeps a history of the most recent items copied ... (view more)

Organize cluttered Start Menu?, Part 2

Last week , Infopackets Reader Diane M. asked how to organize items in her cluttered Start Menu. In my response, I suggested that Diane right-click over top of the "Program Files" and use the Windows Explorer to "Explore All Users" of the Start Menu ... to sort her icons. Shortly after emailing my response, Diane wrote in again: " Dennis: thanks for your response. I went to Start -> Program Files, right-clicked, and chose to Explore ... but I did not see the 'Explore All Users' option. I am using Windows XP; would that make any difference? Sort Start Menu alphabetically -- and apply to all users?

Infopackets Reader Fred G. writes: " Dear Dennis, I love your newsletter. I just finished reading the last issue of the Gazette (regarding how to sort the Start Menu) and have a related question. I know there is a way to alphabetize your all ... programs menu -- but is there a way to apply this setting for all users that log into the computer? If so, can you please list the instructions again in the newsletter? Thanks again and keep up the great job! " My response: As far as I understand, the Start Menu appearance (with respect to how it is sorted) is different for each user account ... (view more)
