AppStore Users: Beware New Email Scam

Apple iPad and iPhone owners are being targeted by a new scareware-like scheme this week, which uses a unique phishing strategy to frighten them into giving up their personal data. Fake Email Spoofs Apple App Users The scam is being reported by security company F-Secure, who say that hackers are using carefully designed emails to fool Apple fans. An email appears in a target's inbox from the "Apple AppStore," telling the recipient that their recent app order "has been successfully cancelled." Those users who don't want that to happen are asked to click on the link "order information" to find ...view more

Online Holiday Shopping? Read Dennis' Top 10 Recommendations

With over 30 years in computing experience, I'm often asked my opinion about computer hardware. Questions like, "What can I do to speed up my computer?", or "What type of laptop should I buy?" and things of that nature. Like anyone else, I love a good deal. In order to find the best deal possible, sometimes I spend an entire day shopping online to compare prices and features of similar components. Unfortunately, many of the "recommendations" I've read recently appear to be forged for the sake of making a sale, which means there's an awful lot of time wasted wading through ...view more

LinkedIn Email Spam Packs Malware, Steals Bank Info

If you've recently received an abundance of email LinkedIn invitation requests from strangers, you're not alone. A new form of malicious spam attack is making its rounds, consisting of what appears to be an innocent "friend request" from the popular business-oriented social networking site LinkedIn. The request is anything but legitimate; in actually, these fake emails contain links to a website where the malicious ZeuS malware is downloaded directly to your PC without consent. The goal of ZeuS is simple: to compromise the personal and financial data of all of its victims. Instant ...view more

Facebook 'Dislike' Button Offer A Scam

Facebook users have been urged not to click on a link claiming to offer a "dislike" button. The link scams users to get access to their Facebook account. Dislike Link is Not Endorsed by Facebook There is an official "Like" function on Facebook. It allows users to give a virtual 'thumbs up' to comments or news posted by their friends. The function has now been extended so that third-party websites can publish a "Like button" on their sites: when visitors click the button, their Facebook account automatically posts a link to the relevant page. A common use is to allow readers to share a link to ...view more

MIT Wins $40,000 'Balloon Hunt' Thanks to Internet

A government contest whereby participants were requested to spot ten weather balloons at once has been won by the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT). But MIT took the prize thanks to the help of a network of ordinary Internet users recruited under an intricate cash reward system. The content was launched by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the same group which developed a network commonly acknowledged as the forerunner of the Internet. The idea of the contest was to see how people would use online networking to solve a problem too big for any one individual. ...view more

Ashampoo Office 2008 Trial Download

We've had a lot of feedback over the past few days regarding the review on Ashampoo Office 2008. The biggest question of course: "Where is the trial download?" We've contacted the folks over at Ashampoo and they've set us up with a direct page to the trial download ... BUT -- Before you go clicking on the download link, please read carefully: 1. There are two versions of Ashampoo Office. The "regular" version asks you for a serial number from the start and won't install without one. The other version is a 30 day free trial -- this is the one you want if you want to try the program ...view more

Google Gloats: Search Engine Index Hits A Trillion Pages

There are now more than a trillion web pages...and those are just the ones Google knows about. Google's index of web pages has grown from 26 million in 1998 to a billion (one thousand million) in 2000 and now to a trillion (one million million) in 2008. The search engine firm announced the statistic as a way of publicizing its position as the market leader (ahem, gloating). Writing in a post on the company's blog, software engineers Jesse Alpert said that the Google system reprocesses the entire index several times a day, each of which is equivalent to checking every road intersection in a ...view more
