Infopackets Reader Harry V. writes: " Dear Dennis, My Windows 10 PC recently updated, but got stuck in an automatic repair boot loop. Now it won't boot into Windows. To fix this, I created Windows Install media on a USB thumb drive using another PC, ... then I booted off the thumb drive on the broken PC and reinstalled Windows. I am now trying to partition the C drive into two partitions (C and D), with C containing only the operating system and D drive containing my user data. When I use disk management (diskmgmt.msc) to shrink the C drive, it tells me there isn't enough free space to shrink the ... (view more)

How to Fix: Spinning Blue Circle in Windows 10

Infopackets Reader Carol G. writes: " Dear Dennis, Since last week, my Windows 10 computer keeps showing a constant spinning blue circle instead of a white pointer. The spinning blue circle will appear for minutes at a time, then switch back to the ... white pointer for a brief second, then back to the spinning blue circle. Most of the time I can't click the Start button (or anything, for that matter) because the spinning blue circle won't let me click on anything. Even if the white pointer appears, if I click on something it takes 5 minutes for anything to happen. It's maddening! I've tried ... (view more)

How to Fix: Linux Filesystem has Errors, MySql Database Table Crashed

Recently we were faced with a power outage on the server which then ... caused corruption in the PHPList database. Just recently the laptop has been extremely slow; whenever I click on anything, the cursor will spin for literally 3 to 5 minutes before I am ... able to do anything. I have been playing around with a CentOS (Linux) virtual machine for the last few months. When I first created the virtual machine, I ... selected the default size for the operating system which is 8 gigabytes. Available Space Misreported by USB drive?, Part 2

A recent question raised a red flag in my mind. I think most, if not all, of you read my 'brief' description of about what happened to the missing 32 MB on a 512 MB Thumb Drive: Available Space Misreported by USB drive? Allow me to explain in ... greater detail. On a hard drive, thumb drive, or any other storage device in common use, the capacity displayed on the carton is the maximum 'raw' or usable number of bytes the device can hold. However, a device that 'says' it can hold 512 MB of data will not display the number 512 MB after it has been formatted. As stated in the previous article , some ... (view more)

Available Space Misreported by USB drive?

Infopackets Reader Jeff R. writes: "I recently bought a 512MB USB 'TravelDrive' made by Memorex. Everything works great, except I can't figure out why the drive is only showing 480MB of usable, available space. In correspondence with a Memorex tech, ... I asked why this was so, and his answer was rather vauge and confusing. Does it really take 32 MB of overhead to format a USB drive? If this is the case, it's probably a good thing I didn't buy a 128MB drive!" Doug's Response: It's questions like these that make me feel glad I've been involved in the computer industry for as long as I have. ;-) In ... (view more)
