Hi-Tech Sensors Could Keep Streets Safe

Five years ago, if you asked some of the people who resided in the Lenox neighborhood of New Jersey what they feared most, most of them would probably say drug dealing, prostitution solicitation and the occasional gunshot. It's a far step from the ... average person's fears, which might include rush-hour traffic or putting on weight over the holidays. However, the small suburb of Lenox had become so infested with criminal behavior that police were no longer being called to respond to most of the illegal activities taking place in the area. New Jersey police had tried a number of solutions to rid ... (view more)

A High-Tech Big Brother Plan

In a couple recent articles by myself and my colleague Brandon Dimmel , we've mentioned the Big Brother concept a couple of times. Now we can talk about the worst Big Brother case scenario known to modern man (and woman). When used correctly, the ... concept of Big Brother can be beneficial to everyone's safety and security. When used as a tool to maintain complete control over an entire country, there is always the possibility of mind-numbing civil rights violations, too. At least 20,000 police surveillance cameras are reportedly being installed along streets in southern China. These will soon ... (view more)

Sony Recalls Continue to Mount

Sony electronics is recalling close to 400,000 Cyber-Shot cameras worldwide due to a dangerous defect. The specific models in question are the Cyber-Shot DSC-T5, with serial numbers between 3500001 and 3574100. The recalled cameras have a metal ... plating on the bottom of their units that may warp. If warping occurs, a sharp edge will be created that can cut or scratch a user's hand. An oversight during the manufacturing of the cameras is responsible for the problem. It turns out that the plating was not equipped with enough adhesive strength to prevent it from lifting. While this is an error on ... (view more)

Police to Blanket NYC with Cameras

In a recent piece on Microsoft's Windows Vista, our Bill Lindner warned users that "Big Brother" might just be watching you. If you're a resident of New York City, that threat just moved from your computer to the busy, dingy streets outside. What ... this essentially means is that the city itself will be installing both license plate readers and cameras across the crowded areas of Lower Manhattan. The project is called the "Lower Manhattan Security Initiative", a bit tamer than London, England's similar "ring of steel". London put such technology to use in order to curtail terrorist threats, ... (view more)

PMA Digicam Shootout 2006: Review

I just got back from the 82nd annual Photo Marketing Association (PMA) trade show in Orlando, Florida, and I've got some new hot picks to share. With Kodak claiming that the digital photography market is now in "phase two," the rush to buy one is ... over, now we have to figure out how to track all the digital photos. WiFi is being added to cameras to enable images to be shared and stored in real-time. James Neal, GM for Digital Imaging at Sony boasts how Sony pioneered digital photography with the "first auto-focus body-integral SLR camera in 1985." Sony acquired Minolta's assets when they shut ... (view more)

Future Photos Trends: Simply Click

Back in 1888, George Eastman started selling the new $24 “Kodak”, saying “press the button, we do the rest.” All a snap shooter had to do was shoot, then mail the “box camera” back to Rochester NY, where Kodak processed the film and sent back small black & ... white prints along with the reloaded camera. By the way: for the young photographers, cameras back then were all mechanical, without light meters, and were pre-set for taking pictures on bright sunny days. ;-) Fast forward 117 years to the digital age. We are still hearing “Press the button, we ...view more)

TWAIN compliant graphics editor?, Part 2

Recall -- A few weeks back, Infopackets Reader Brad B. asked if it was possible to transfer his digital camera photo software from his work computer to his home PC: " Dear Dennis, Many years ago, I bought a digital camera that came with the software ... program called 'Camedia'. Unfortunately my computer crashed last year and (worse yet) I can't find the CD to reinstall it on my PC! Before I lost the disc, I managed to install Camedia on the computer at work, and thankfully, it's still working fine. I have tried copying the Camedia files from the work computer to my home computer, but it won ... (view more)
