Apple Expected to Unveil iPhone 6 This Week
It still hasn't been officially announced, but already people are lining up to get their hands on the iPhone 6, which Apple is expected to unveil in a press event on Tuesday, September 9. The question is, will the new iPhone 6 have a significant impact on Apple's market share?
In the fourth quarter of 2013, Apple's share of the mobile phone market sat at 12.9%, with Android-based systems at a record high 81%. While its share has declined substantially over the years, it's reported that Apple rakes in 56% of all the profit, which is more money than all of its competitors combined. (Source: forbes.com)
Consumers Demand Better Battery Life, Camera
Experts believe Apple will set the iPhone 6 apart from its predecessors by introducing a larger screen. Speculation is that the iPhone 6 will be available with 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays -- a notable size increase from the 4-inch iPhone 5S.
Other suggested technical specifications include an 8 megapixel camera, 500 dpi pixel density fingerprint sensor, shatter proof crystal sapphire glass, water resistant coating, 16 to 128GB of storage capacity, 2GB of RAM, 1080p 60FPS video, and a dual core 2 GHz processor. (Source: gsmarena.com)
Beyond that, it's expected the iPhone 6 will feature better battery life. One recent poll found that more than one in three respondents felt extending the iPhone's battery power was the single, most important thing they wanted from a new Apple smartphone.
Excitement over the new iPhone has led some die-hard Apple fans to line up outside the company's flagship store along Fifth Avenue in New York City. They could be camped there for some time, however, as Apple typically releases its new smartphones about ten days after their unveiling. That would mean the iPhone 6 should be available to the public starting on Friday, September 19. (Source: techtimes.com)
Android Users Unlikely to Make the Switch, Survey Suggests
There's little doubt that iPhone fans will be excited about the new launch, but a new survey suggests the iPhone 6 is unlikely to woo its competition.
The poll, which was carried out by research firm Survata, found that only 5 per cent of Android users were planning to ditch their current smartphones for the iPhone 6. An additional 12.4 per cent, however, did say they were "somewhat likely" to make the switch.
Survata says the poll shows many smartphone users are now becoming deeply attached to their current mobile operating system, meaning it may be less likely for tech companies to encourage such a switch. (Source: cnet.com)
What's Your Opinion?
Are you interested in the iPhone 6? Have you ever waited in line for a product launch and if so, was it worth it? What's your preferred mobile OS and would you ever switch to a rival system? If so, what are your main reasons for making a switch?
