Google Glass Compatible with Prescription Eyewear
Google has announced good news for four-eyed people like me: the company's upcoming Google Glass technology will be compatible with prescription eyewear.
If you haven't heard of it, Google Glass is new, cutting-edge technology that allows wearers to access unique applications displayed in front of their eyes.
The device looks like a cross between a set of the latest, trendy eye glasses and the special visor worn by Geordi La Forge in the popular 1990s sci-fi show "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
Google Glass to Retail for $1,000 or More
So, what can Google Glass do? New applications are emerging all the time, but some of the more popular ideas include an app that identifies people by their clothes ("InSight") and global positioning system apps that project directions in front of the user.
It's also expected that Google Glass will feature technology that allows owners of Google Android-based devices, such as the Nexus 7 tablet computer, to access special, cross-platform applications.
The device comes equipped with a side-mounted touchpad, a built-in camera, and support for both WiFi and Bluetooth connections. It's expected the device will cost between $1,000 and $1,500 when it ships later this year. (Source: cnet.com)
Technology "Highly Modular," Google Says
At first it wasn't clear if the device could be equipped with prescription lenses. Now, Google has offered more information on this point.
"The Glass design is modular, so you will be able to add frames and lenses that match your prescription," Google noted on its Google+ social networking site. "We understand how important this is and we've been working hard on it." (Source: manolith.com)
Google also noted that it's continuing to work on "perfecting the design for prescription frames," so it's possible that this version of the Google Glass design won't be ready when the technology first becomes available to consumers.
However, insiders believe that Google Glass sets compatible with prescription lenses will be available before the end of 2013.
