Analyst Predicts 2011 Release for iPad 2
The Apple iPad is off to a fast start, dominating a nascent but growing market. But that doesn't mean Apple has stopped thinking about its successor; in fact, one analyst predicts the Cupertino-based company will probably have a new iPad ready for release in the spring.
Gleacher & Co. analyst Brian Marshall recently told tech news site ComputerWorld that he believes a new iPad design will be available to the public as early as April 2011, in the neighborhood of a year after the original iPad's release.
The Time is Now, Says Expert
"I think April is the proper time-frame for an iPad 2," Marshall stated, adding "Since I'm projecting that Apple will release a CDMA [Code Division Multiple Access] iPhone in March, both will help to equalize Apple's seasonality." (Source: digitaltrends.com)
There is some evidence to back up Marshall's prediction. Recent rumors suggest Apple has hired a few different firms to produce parts for a new iPad design for early February. "The sources said Ibiden, Tripod and TTM have received certification from Apple, and will start shipping any-layer HDI boards for iPad 2 in small quantities in December," noted Digitimes blogger Jessie Shen.
Of course, these remain rumors, but it would make sense for Apple to keep the good feeling going by incorporating iPad user comments and suggestions into a new design released to a still-fascinated audience.
Tech blog Digital Trends also points out several price reductions made by Apple to the original iPad, which may be some indication that the company is clearing out stock in preparation for a new product.
"World iPad" Means Data Access Anywhere
The mere concept of a new iPad by next spring is sure to provide rocket fuel to the many, already existing rumors about iPad 2's reported feature set. To date, experts and non-experts alike have suggested the incorporation of dual cameras for online video chats, motion control sensors for Wii-like gaming sessions, and a beefier processor.
One of the more exciting (and realistic) rumors may be that recently mentioned by Brian Blair, an analyst for Wedge Partner. Blair claims Apple is working towards a "World iPad" that will incorporate a dual CDMA-GSM (satellite) chip allowing data access no matter where on the globe the device is being used. Regardless, everyone seems to be in agreement that the iPad will continue to be a success in 2011. Blair expects Apple will ship an incredible 48 million units next year alone.
