Freeware Picture Viewers
On October 2nd, 2003, I asked Infopackets Readers for some Freeware Picture viewers:
Missing Picture Viewer for Windows 98?
I am happy to say that I received many responses. In fact, a great deal of readers highly recommended a program called IrfanView. From the web site:
" IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative freeware (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP. It is ... simple [enough] for beginners, and [yet] powerful [enough] for professionals ... Some IrfanView features: Many supported file formats, Multi language support, Thumbnail/preview option, Slideshow (save slideshow as EXE/SCR or burn it to CD), Support for Adobe Photoshop Filters, Drag & drop support, Fast directory view (moving through directory), Batch conversion (with image processing), Print option, Change color depth, Cut/crop, Effects (Sharpen, Blur, Filter Factory), Extract icons from EXE/DLL/ICLs, Lossless JPG rotation, Many command line [DOS] options Many PlugIns, Only one EXE-File: no DLLs, no Shareware messages like 'I Agree' or 'Evaluation expired' ... and many more! "
Dan M. recommended Jpegger:
" Hi, Dennis - Although I also use a few others, like Kodak Imaging which came with Win98SE and Microsoft Photo Editor which came with MS Word 2000, my default viewer is the freeware JPegger from Vallen.de. One feature that I like is that, if you've selected the 'fit' sizing option, it will automatically resize an image that is too large for the screen to the largest proportional size that will fit on the screen. Cheers, and keep up the good work!"
Side note: I had trouble accessing the main web site, but was able to download the file from Tucows.com. Judging by the screenshots, the program looks very good.

Dean M. recommended VJPeg. From the web site:
" ... [View] 'images as objects' so once they're open, you drag them around the screen by clicking and dragging. That's it. If you push them against the top or left edge of the screen, they 'stick' ... resize to stay on the screen ... live zooming ... VJPEG is really small (98K installer), really fast, and you can view big files pretty easily. "
