Use Word's Tabs Dialog Box To Set Multiple Tabs

You can use the ruler in Word to easily set tabs exactly where you need them, which is what I almost always use.

It may be easier sometimes though, to use the Tabs dialog box if you find that you need to set leader tabs, which you cannot apply on the ruler.

Suppose you need to set two left tab stops at 1.5" and 3.5" from the left margin and a right leader tab stop 5" from the left margin. I will show you how to set them all at one time!

Follow the steps below:

  1. Position your cursor where you want the tabs to be set.

  2. Click Format | Tabs.

  3. In Word 2007, click Page Layout tab | Paragraph dialog box arrow |Tabs button.)

  4. Type 1.5 in the Tab Stop Position dialog box.

  5. Click the Set button.

  6. Type 3.5 in the Tab Stop Position dialog box.

  7. Click the Set button.

  8. Type 5 in the Tab Stop Position dialog box.

  9. Select the Right button.

  10. Select the 2 Leader button.

  11. Click the Set button.

  12. Click OK.

The Normal template sets tab stops every half inch, but you can also use the Tabs dialog box to change the default tab stops by simply entering the number by which you want to indent your paragraphs into the Default Tab Stops box and clicking OK.
