Google Says 'NO' to US Government Request to Hand Over Search Data

When the U.S. Government requested search data from the web giants, Yahoo! and MSN said "yes" and Google said "no," forcing the matter into the courts. The government's position is that this request would aid in its efforts "to understand the ... behavior of current web users, to estimate how often web users encounter harmful-to-minors material in the course of their searches, and to measure the effectiveness of filtering in screening that material." Additionally, the government wants to know what "web sites people find through the use of search engines, to determine the character of those sites ... (view more)

Yahoo! Concedes to Google

In a recent interview, Yahoo! CFO Susan Decker made some interesting statements about Yahoo!'s position as a search company. She said: " We don't think it's reasonable to assume we're going to gain a lot of share from Google. It's not our goal to be ... No. 1 in Internet search. We would be very happy to maintain our market share. We have held our own, and we should gain revenue share in the industry as we roll out these new initiatives. Our goal has been to hold our share and to be a leading, if not the leading, total marketing platform, which would include both brand and search. " ( ... (view more)

Sarah's Year in Review: 2005

As I reminisce about the year gone by, I realize that there was a lot going on. What really stands out for me as the top tech stories of 2005 are as follows: 1. Google. Google becomes a powerhouse company, rolling out beta after beta. Some bomb (Web ... Accelerator); some are so fantastic I wonder how I lived without them (Gmail/Gmail Mobile), and some just confuse (GoogleBase). Still, Google makes it known they are a force to be reckoned with. Watch out for Google's online office suite in 2006. You know it's coming. 2. Tagging. Everyone is tagging now. Tag photos on flickr. Tag bookmarks on del. ... (view more)

Google lets you add customized content to your personalized Google homepage once you sign into your Google account . It's a great feature that allows you to really customize the page with favorite RSS feeds, weather, stocks, etc. And now there's ... Google Modules : an unofficial website that offers up many modules you can add to your homepage. Flock Founder Tired of Criticism

Flock is getting some negative attention as of late. People wonder why they need to use a browser like Flock now that Performancing Firefox plugin allows them to blog from Firefox using many different blogging platforms. Recently, Flock's Chris ... Messina , addressed some of the Flock backlash on his blog. It's a good post . He said: Here's the thing. We've actually been pretty certain for some time that most of the features that we build into Flock will be eventually be ported back over to Firefox as extensions. Or become commodity features in other browsers. That's the way open source should ... (view more)

Protopage: Your new start page?

Protopage may want to be the new homepage (or for Firefox users, one of many homepages!), but it won't be mine any time soon. Protopage lets the user put personalized news, sticky notes, and bookmarks all on one page. This is very Web 2.0. The ... personalized news stories are RSS feeds, of course, and the sticky notes can be anything: a to-do list, reminders, whatever a user would like. An interesting thing about Protopage is how it shows off the power of page AJAX. It was fun to plan around with ( see my page ), but I don't need it. I don't need sticky notes on my homepage. I'm perfectly happy ... (view more)
